Hashbrown - Rap Mayor 2 Landslide

Houston rapper HashBrown returns with the sequel to 2010's Rap Mayor, Rap Mayor 2: Landslide.  Where RM1 felt rushed and didn't flow together, it had standout tracks and RM2 flows nicely but doesn't have as many standout tracks.  I'll take the latter because to me putting together a concentrated project for more than 8 songs has become a dying breed.

The thing you must know about Hash is that he is a Rappers Rapper, you can tell he studies great predecessors and wants to be in there company.  He attacks each track with vivid imagery and extensive vocabulary but lacks a smooth flow.  That's not as bad as it seems, but the concentration and the need to make sure he's seen as a lyricist can get in the way of him not thinking about what he's saying  and just having fun rapping. Hash often clashes witht he beat messing up the flow of the song a la Freeway.  We all love Freeway, but definitely would love a smoother sound, but if he gave us a smoother sound, then we wouldn't get the ferocious rap that we LOVE, its a catch 22!

Rap Mayor 2 is solid, 7/10, a good mix of original and freestyle downlowd below

SPOTLIGHT: AHead Of Class

We Are Not The Cool Kids ...
We Are Not Pac Div...
We Are Not U-N-I...
We Are Not The Niceguys...

If there is anything you should know about AoC, it's that they're original and creating a new sound called Bombastic rap. While looking from outside the snowglobe, you'd think they were clones of the above mentioned groups, but hardly! More energetic but less lyrical than the groups, AoC brings a fun to hiphop meshing with retro style and vision that the other groups don't have.

Seemingly leader of the group Tony is bold and calculating, heart throb AF is smooth, but agressive on the mic--comparison to Wesley Snipes character in White Men Can't Jump, and Vic, the shy yet confident rapper set in his tenor ways all make for an interesting mixture. With in house production and a great visuals in their catalog AOC is ready for Houston to take notice.

Here is BasicSounds exclusive interview of AOC

How are you?

Hey man We good, just making music and loving it!! We are excited that the new Ep Vantage Point 86 is doing so well for us. So We cant complain LOL

For starters describe who is AoC ?

AheadOfClass is the voice of the radicals, the love for the lovers and some young motherfuckers who is here to change the way the south, especially Houston, is being viewed musically.

What type of sound do you have and what are the influences?

Well shit, i cant (TonyDel) put a finger on who We sound like. I believe the sound is new to the region, kind of how outkast did in Atlanta in the 90s. Or more recently what Kendrick Lamar is doing for the west coast. We are just doing something new and fun i would call it bombastic rap. Our songs are full of energy and breathes life into the listener (well thats what We hope happens)

Tell us about your create process?

Our producers cp3, Chaz Fuego and 7th Letter normally load our email with beats and us rapper guys normally write and formulate different versions of the beat. We then get together and craft them out LOL. There are some some tracks that is mapped primarily by one person like Woodstock 69 will took the driver seat with that one. Last shot was headed by g2 and lifestyles of born again sinners by tony. It be like i got This verse i got This hook i jus need yall to fill it in LOL

What separates you from the millions of other rappers?

Our live shows are craaaaazzzzzyyyyy!!! LOL Our energy is,what sets us apart at first glimpse. Once you get lnto Our tapes, the way We tackle life issues and Our own vices seperates us from the next rapper. We love This shit. Its not for a check so all Our songs are from the heart Or moment. We have the ability to capture moments and make awesome songs from them.

Hiphop influences other entertainment and vice versa what are your Favorite clothing brands?favorite retro?

Outkast,Bone,Ugk, the late great Dj Screw are the rapper influences. But We kinda be like fuvk rap!! Its all recycled anyway. We listened to alot of pink floyd, mgmt, girl, coheed and cambria and erykah badu while recording vp86 LOL crazy huh? Clothing wise right now Im in alot of diamond supply, small circle clothing, blue dolphin, while performing. You can catch me in 10 deep and imking alot too. Obey jeans and huf t's are the norm. Gotta be confortable LOL. Not a big retro fan although i do own some classic ralph lauren shit. All my ol skool shit is Jordan LOL 3,4,6,11 they can keep that other shit.

Favorite lyrics in music .

Favorite music line is from a coheed song Where Claudio says "This is not your playground. Its my heart" i feel that way bout music alot of so call artist claim they the best but just play with my craft. This shit is my life!!

I notice a distinct effort to be energetic in your music, where does that come from?

We are energetic because Our city is slow as fuck!!!!! We are heavily influences by rock music and they always bring the energy. I hate going to a rap show and the rapper stands still in one place rapping. We be like get yo ass up and move!!!!!! LOL

What do you fear people won't take away listening to your music?

We touch on real life shit. Like on Our track PONR. We speak about Our lazy judicial system Our poor school system how as a generaciĆ³n We going to college just because. Not rally knowing what We want out of life. I think people over look Our positive message.

Are you misunderstood or undervalued?

We might be misunderstood but We are artist so its open to the listeners own interprertation. We are extremely undervalued for what We do. We breed a new life to Our underground scene. While all Our supporters are from different states Wtf is up with that? Shit is crazy.

How is the music scene in your area?

The music scene in Houston is diverse yet dull. We only have one promotor bringing big name artist and they dont give any good underground talent a chance unless they pay. Which is bullshit imo. But its good artist emerging from houston. We are inferir rated for Hip hop.

Future Plans?

The next project will be the Lawson Kelley Ep by TonyDel then Vantage Point 87. You can catch us at sxsw next month doing rapper stuff. As far as major moves We have been talking to a few major labels. So you might see AoC all over pretty soon!!!!

Ryshon Jones – Fighting With My Conscious

Always speaking from the heart, the talented Ryshon Jones leaks another track. Who outworks this kid?

This song was inspired by a talk I had with the producer of the song. I heard the beat and I was contemplating on what to say on it, and I ended up being too self-conscious of what i should say and ended up making a song about wishing I lost the ability to not think at all.

SPOTLIGHT: Dirty N Nasty (Rap Group)

The South is no stranger to birthing Hip-Hop/Rap groups, in fact it has birthed some of the most prolyfic including UGK, OutKast, Goodie Mob, Three 6 Mafia and 8Ball & MJG. Fast forward present day and the number of groups have doubled but far less are noteworthy or even worth covering. In Houston alone there seems to be a new breeding ground of rap groups to choose from including The NiceGuys, H.I.S.D., 220, A Head of Class, and Dirty N Nasty

What makes Dirty N Nasty standout is their resilience accompanied with a myriad of topics covered from Pimping to Parking Lot Pimping to SneakerPimps! The group feeds off of well placed beat choices and the energy from those beat selections. Dirty, the easier listen, is confident in his vocals and carries a strong lineage of black history in his lyrics. While Nasty's offtime / ontime flow takes a while to get used to, but is charming when you find the hidden jewels of his bars.

SPOTLIGHT: DIRTY N NASTY

How are you?

(Nasty) I'm good. Thx for reaching out brother. Appreciate the love
(Dirty) Doing well man. Thank you for the interview opportunity.

No problem at all, For starters describe to readers, who Dirty and Nasty are?

(Dirty) Dirty & Nasty is comprised of 2 members, Dirty Dog D aka D3 & Nasty Nique aka The Texas Chainsaw. We are a rap duo from Houston TX. I am from 5th Ward & Nasty is from The Southwest, TX (SWAT). We are a combination of street knowledge and book knowledge. The Matrix mixed with 808's.

(Nasty) to add to what Dirty said if we had a missions statement it would be " A Laidback style mixed with the Coolness of Raw power.

What type of sound do you have and what are the group influences?

(Nasty) Melodies, harmonies, sounds with movement. We look up to groups that had/have a good energy between members like a Rage, a Led Zepplin, A NWA, Outkast, Ball & G, UGK, ABN, Rae & Ghost, and etc. Energy with a purpose.

(Dirty) We definitely have many influences from UGK & 8Ball/MJG to Rage Against The Machine. Pretty much any rap duo from the South (Outkast, DJ Paul/Juicy J, etc). We have a sound that mixes hard rap lyricism with r&b melodies/rhythms.

What separates you from the millions of other rap groups?

(Nasty) I think what we have is a dynamic that most of the great groups have, which is that 2 song writer dynamic. Even more than try to spit hot bars we try to compose songs. Like Lennon and McCarthy we both make songs from equally, but different methods. So the group has a dual dynamic in which our two different styles bounce and feed off of each other.

(Dirty) ... we bring ENERGY ENERGY ENERGY every set we do, whether if it's one song or 30mins worth of songs. We also make a concerted effort to bring knowledge to the forefront of everything we rap about, from dogging out scandalous females (on our first album, Dirty & Nasty: The Dog 'Em Tracks) to rapping about our love for shoes (our Sneaker Pimpin' mixtape) to our mutual love for hip-hop the art form (listen to Flowers on our Stylin' & Profilin' EP).

Hiphop influences style and vice versa what are your Favorite clothing brands?

(Nasty) Nike, Adidas, UNDRCRWN, New Era fitteds, Rich Ghetto Kids, ADL, UNKO, and ima also a fan of making my own 1 of 1 designs and going to get those printed up and Chuck Taylors.

Favorite lyrics in music (can be rap or any genre)

(Dirty) Any song written by Maynard James Keenan of Tool & A Perfect Circle; I also like the simplicity of R&B music from the early 90s (I.E.- New Jack Swing).

(Nasty) like Kendrick Lamar said " My simplest shit be the more pivotal." So I like MCs who spit simple truths but mix in a little wit and bite everyone in a while like an Outkast or a Kendrick Lamar.

I notice a distinct effort to send a message in your lyrics, where does that come from?

(Dirty) I was always taught by my grandmother: Answer when spoken to, stand up to speak and sit down to be appreciated. My father always said to me when I was young: to speak with a purpose. That is what many of these other rap cats are not doing. Everything does have it place; however, when the dance music dies down, you have got to take time to think about life. The party can't last forever.

How is the music scene in your area?

(Nasty) the scene is definitely ready to explode on the National level again. There are alotta creative and original MCs in our city(Houston) and the city is starting to gain more outlets so people outside of the city are starting to take notice again.

Future Plans?

(Dirty) We are about to release our 2nd EP called Fools Gold, in anticipation of our 2nd album, Black Gold. It will have a nice selection of songs, with features from Kyle Hubbard, John Dew (of T.H.E.M.), Mic Skills (of Mission Control fame), Kam Franklin (great female singer) and production by some of Houston's finest, like Julian Spade, Socrates, Black Rose (of Space City Beat Battle fame). We also have some great promotional merchandise coming very soon. Exclusive stuff...

HASHBROWN - NEXT UP FROM HOUSTON?

BOLD

BRASH

yet

EMOTIONAL & OPEN HEARTED???

This is HASHBROWN, you can't really place him, or guess his moves. The MC by way of Houston is paving his own lane, and not giving a flying fuck! I have always felt honest rap is the best rap besides straight up entertaining rap. It gives credibility to the story or movie we're listening to from the artist. Hash is obnoxious on wax, but also rapping like an emo case ... its puzzling and brilliant at the same time peep below:

Devestation / Clarity serves up exactly what I mean! He gives you T.O. bragging raps and Terrell Owens crying for help raps.

Hash isn't the best MC ever nor now, but can you convince him he's not??? The MC needs to work on pacing his rhymes and delivery, but maybe that would change him too much, thats the beauty.
Hopefully he only gets better as he shows promise for HOUSTON and rap in general.
